Sadiq Khan hosts London devolution summit

Created on
14 July 2016
Sadiq Khan today hosts a summit of political and business leaders from across London as he begins forging an ambitious new cross-party consensus on further devolution to London.

The Mayor is hosting Conservative and Labour MPs and council leaders at City Hall for the discussions today, which will also include business representatives from the Corporation of London, London First and the London Chamber of Commerce.

Sadiq Khan is aiming to reach a broad agreement on a more ambitious push for further devolution to London Government in the aftermath of the EU referendum result.
The Mayor of London is pushing for an ambitious settlement for London, which will give City Hall and the boroughs significantly more control over taxes raised in the capital and how public services are run.

Sadiq Khan warned that ‘we can’t protect Londoners from the economic fallout of leaving the EU without more autonomy for London government. This is essential to protecting Londoners' jobs, wealth and prosperity.’

Sadiq Khan said:

“We can’t protect Londoners from the economic fallout of leaving the EU without more autonomy for London government.

“This is all about protecting Londoners' jobs, wealth and prosperity and providing an extra incentive for economic growth.

“Now is the time for us to raise our ambition and unite as a city to call for greater autonomy for Londoners.

“Londoners should have more control over how taxes raised in our city are spent, and how public services are run.

“Not only will London benefit, but so will the entire country. With interest rates at the floor, this is the time for investment. If we increase investment, London and the UK will grow.”
Chief Executive of London Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Colin Stanbridge said:
"Keeping London an economic success has always been vital not just to us who live and work in the capital but to the whole country.
"Now, as we face into the future, outside the EU, it is more important than ever that policymakers carefully consider what they can do to ensure the UK prospers, not falters, in the years ahead".
Cllr Claire Kober, Chair of London Councils, said:
‘We are united with the Mayor in calling for the greater devolution of powers from Whitehall.
“Given the challenges now facing London, it is critical that we seek a devolution deal that sees boroughs as equal partners with the Mayor, London’s businesses, and the Government in securing the future success of our city.
‘Devolution would enable London local authorities to continue to deliver essential public services during a period of austerity - and to forge ahead with the much needed integration of health and social care; skills and employment services; as well as tackling the city’s housing crisis.
‘Bringing London together at this time is essential to solve the problems that concern Londoners the most.’
