Planning for London’s mega-growth

Created on
13 October 2014

This meeting took place on 14 October 2014. Read the transcript here.

The London Assembly Planning Committee will tomorrow hold a meeting to discuss whether the Mayor is properly planning for the infrastructure London will need over the coming decades.

London’s growth forecast is unprecedented.

It is predicted that by 2050 the demand for public transport will rise by 50 per cent, the demand on energy supplies by 20 per cent, 600 more schools will be required and every year 50,000 new homes will be needed.

The Mayor’s draft London Infrastructure Plan 2050 identifies a number of challenges arising from this growth. It sets out the range of infrastructure that the Mayor believes will meet London’s short, medium and long term needs up to 2050.

To inform the London Assembly’s response to the Mayor’s consultation on the Plan, the London Assembly Planning Committee holds a meeting tomorrow with invited experts.

The main discussion areas for the meeting are:

What infrastructure is needed to accommodate London’s growth sustainably?

How should the Mayor prioritise development and unlock land?

How should the infrastructure be managed and delivered at a strategic level?

What is the optimal balance between centralised and decentralised systems?

The Committee will question the following guests:

Lord Andrew Adonis, Shadow Minister, Infrastructure, House of Lords

Jerome Frost, Arup, UK Middle East and Africa Leader for Consulting.

Michael Henderson, Aecom Design and Planning

Dominic Hogg, Chairman, Eunomia consultants

Jeremy Skinner, GLA. Senior Manager - Growth & Enterprise

The meeting will take place on Tuesday, 14 October from 3.30pm in Committee Room 5 at City Hall (The Queen’s Walk, London SE1).

Media and members of the public are invited to attend. The meeting can also be viewed via webcast.
