What’s the right ‘devo deal’ for London?

Created on
25 February 2015

This meeting took place on 26 February 2015. Read the transcript for the first section here and the second section here.

How could today’s news that Manchester is to be granted radical new health and social care powers affect the capital’s care time-bomb?

What about jobs – could boroughs perform better than Whitehall in helping residents into well-paid work and to stay in work?

The London Assembly Devolution Working Group will tomorrow discuss devolving more control to London government with guests:

Sir Edward Lister, Chief of Staff and Deputy Mayor, Policy and Planning, GLA

Mayor Jules Pipe, Chair, London Councils

Cllr Philippa Roe, Executive Member for Devolution and Public Service Reform, London Councils

Also, as the Mayor of London is currently in charge of policing in the capital – should a future Mayor control the justice system too?

The second section of the meeting will focus on whether devolving control over the justice system to the Mayor would improve the efficiency of the court system. Could it also help improve re-offending rates for convicted criminals?

Stephen Greenhalgh, the Deputy Mayor for Policing & Crime, will be questioned on devolution of the Crown Prosecution Service in London, the courts and the Probation Service.

The meeting will take place tomorrow, Thursday 26 February from 2pm in Committee Room 1, City Hall, The Queen’s Walk.

Media and members of the public are invited to attend. The meeting can also be viewed via webcast.
