What exactly is a ‘City for all Londoners’?

Housing
Created on
14 November 2016

“I will develop the city according to the principles of ‘good growth’” Mayor Sadiq Khan in ‘A City for all Londoners’ consultation document.

The Mayor has a challenging task ahead of him to address the city’s planning and housing issues, especially if ‘good growth’ is to entail:

  • 50 per cent well-designed and spacious affordable housing
  • Tall buildings making a positive contribution to the streetscape and local communities
  • Addressing the pressure on local services, changes in the community and retaining the character of areas

Few policy details are set out in the Mayor’s ‘A City for all Londoners’ consultation document, which was published ahead of a major revision to the London Plan – the strategic planning document for London.

Tomorrow’s London Assembly Planning Committee meeting will be an opportunity for the Committee to question the relevant Deputy Mayors on the Mayor’s thinking and plan of action and inform the Committee’s consultation response. The guests are:

  • Jules Pipe, Deputy Mayor for Planning, Regeneration and Skills
  • James Murray, Deputy Mayor for Housing and Residential Development
  • Elliot Lipton, Managing Director, First Base
  • Dan Epstein, Consultant Director of Sustainability, Useful Projects
  • John Lett, Strategic Planning Manager, Greater London Authority (GLA)

The meeting will take place on Tuesday, 15 November from 10:00am in Committee Room 5 at City Hall (The Queen’s Walk, London SE1). Media and members of the public are invited to attend.

The meeting can also be viewed via webcast.
