In response to the publication of the Mayor of London’s new policing Action Plan, Labour’s London Assembly Policing and Crime Spokesperson, Unmesh Desai AM, said:
“In order to be tough on crime, the Met Police need to have the trust and confidence of London’s diverse communities behind them. However, in recent times, we have seen some considerable strain placed upon the relationship between the police and some of the Londoners they serve to protect.
“This action plan is a step in the right direction, and provides an initial blueprint as to how the Met can comprehensively improve its approach to working and engaging with black Londoners with better accountability and transparency.
“Key to this are the proposals to increase the force’s targeted recruitment and retention of black police officers, expand training programmes and amplify the input of local communities on policing practices, such as stop and search and the use of force.
“A number of the plan’s recommendations chime with the ones that I recently made in my recent report, Policing with Consent, and I will closely scrutinise how these are implemented over the coming months”.
