In response to the news that Newham Council has confirmed that it will be extending its schools air quality audit programme, originally launched by City Hall, local London Assembly Member, Unmesh Desai AM, said:
“We are just beginning to understand the scale of the hugely damaging effects that air pollution has on the health of our children, when they are learning in the classroom or out in the playground.
“This is why it is essential that air quality is monitored, and targeted mitigation measures are put in place at as many schools as possible in high pollution areas.
“It is fantastic to see Newham Council prioritise this and decide to build on the air quality audit scheme kickstarted by City Hall. This could go a long way towards safeguarding the next generation from the toxic air that contributes to the premature deaths of almost 10,000 Londoners per year”.
