In response to the Government’s announcement today that it proposes to provide greater legal protection for police to pursue suspects of moped crime, Labour London Assembly Spokesperson for Policing and Crime, Unmesh Desai AM said:

“Moped crime is a blight on our streets, with perpetrators targeting innocent pedestrians and other moped and motorcycle riders with opportunistic robberies, vicious assaults and acid attacks.

“We have seen the Mayor and the Met work tirelessly to clamp down on this type of crime with Operation Venice which has led to the tracking of known perpetrators and successful raids of garages harbouring stolen vehicles used for crime.

“It was good to see the Government finally take action on this issue and propose to provide greater legal protection for skilled police drivers who choose to pursue suspects of moped crime, when they adhere to strict training protocols.

“However, they have been slow to act on this issue and this is something that I have long been calling for to ensure that these criminals cannot get away with impunity”.
