Transport for London (TfL) has secured another short-term extension of its Government bailout. The agreement will ensure the continuation of public transport in the capital until June 24, 2022.
In response to the announcement, Caroline Pidgeon MBE AM, Chair of the London Assembly Transport Committee, said:
“We welcome today’s extension – but these continued delays to a long-term solution are not useful, and Transport for London is not a political football. For the sake of TfL’s capital and revenue, a permanent deal needs to be in place.
During the pandemic, train operating companies received continuous financial settlements, totalling up to 24 July 2021, more than £10.4 billion. TfL has received four short-term funding settlements from Government, totalling around £4 billion. This is now the fifth short-term non-solution.
“The to-ing and fro-ing has gone on for long enough and it’s time Londoners were given some certainty over the future of their transport system. A longer-term financial settlement is what London and the rest of the UK urgently needs.”
