News from Tom Copley (past staff): New Resolution Foundation Report "reinforces Mayoral housing pledges"

Affordable housing
Created on
08 May 2018

In response to the Resolution Foundation’s proposals to reform the housing and private rented sector, set out in their new report, A New Generational Contract, Labour’s London Assembly Housing Spokesperson, Tom Copley AM said:

“I welcome the Resolution Foundation’s report today that reinforces many of the policy pledges that the Mayor is currently pushing through to improve conditions in the housing and rental market for young Londoners.

“Sadiq’s manifesto and the report both make it clear that urgent action is needed to provide extra stability for renters by securing their right to longer tenancies.

“The report also backs the Mayor’s ‘first dibs’ policy on housing, by calling for powers to be devolved to city Mayors to restrict residential property purchases in highly sought-after areas to UK residents.

“I am also fully behind the Resolution Foundation’s calls for reform of the housing benefit rules to ensure sufficient support is there for struggling young families on lower incomes.

“Evidently, the Government has been behind the curve on addressing the multitude of pressures facing young people, especially in London, in trying to get on the housing ladder and renting from private landlords. I hope they will take notice of this report and the calls from the Mayor and begin to get a grip on the situation.”
