In response to the Mayor’s announcement that he has invested £11 million into delivering up to 200 temporary modular homes for homeless families across the capital, Labour’s London Assembly Housing Spokesperson, Tom Copley AM, said:
“It is a mark of shame on our capital that thousands of homeless families with children are stuck in the limbo of temporary accommodation and often forced into completely unsuitable and cramped conditions.
“Burgeoning housing waiting lists are also placing huge pressures on local authorities who have already had their budgets and resources stretched to breaking point due to sustained Government cuts.
“The Mayor has stepped in here yet again where the Government has failed, investing in modular homes to help to alleviate the plight of homeless families.
“However, if we are to end homelessness, we need the Government to reverse their welfare cuts and caps, and to properly fund the genuinely affordable homes that we need, particularly homes at social rent levels. City Hall needs around four times the funding that it currently receives from Government in order to achieve this.”
