Dear Editor,
A year on from the Grenfell tragedy, it is unacceptable that a significant number of Londoners remain exposed to the dangers of highly combustible cladding in their homes.
The publication of the Hackitt Review largely fell short of reasonable expectations, and with that, overlooked some of the necessary measures to ensure the safety of Londoners. This week, a report from the Housing Communities and Local Government Committee also exposed the Government’s failure to fully get a grip on the situation.
It has been welcome to see the report call for the proposed ban on combustible cladding to be applied to all existing buildings, and not just new builds. It also makes the very reasonable demand for the Government to fully fund the fitting of sprinklers to all tall residential buildings.
For the peace of mind and security of Londoners, it is imperative that the Government pushes through these recommended interventions with immediate effect.
Yours,
Tom Copley AM
