In response to the Government’s announcement that it will launch a consultation on ending section 21, or ‘no fault’, evictions in the private rented sector in England, Labour’s London Assembly Housing Spokesperson, Tom Copley AM, said:

“This is hugely positive news for renters and a testament to the hard-fought End Section 21 campaigns of housing charity, Shelter and Generation Rent.

“For too long, Londoners in the private rented sector have been at the mercy of landlords wielding the disproportionate power to carry out short-notice evictions without good reason.

“With the proportion of private renters in London set to grow to 40% in the next six years, this is one step towards providing proper stability and security for tenants.

“Going forward, we now the Government to safeguard the most vulnerable renters by capping rent rises to prevent unscrupulous landlords from exorbitantly hiking rents to force tenants out”.
