News from Tom Copley (past staff): Crossrail 2 go-ahead must see government pay half

Responding to the announcement that the government has given its backing over Crossrail 2, Labour’s London Assembly Transport Spokesperson, Tom Copley AM, said:

“With Crossrail 2 vital to London’s future economic wellbeing, it’s welcome to hear the government are now willing to work with the Mayor of London to move this project forward.

“Whilst London will be paying half the costs, it’s perfectly reasonable to expect government to pay for the other half when you consider the wider economic benefits to the South East and the rest of the country.

“In the meantime, TfL put forward a strong case for a Crossrail 2 station at King’s Road, Chelsea, which showed it to be a better, more sensible option than Imperial Wharf. It’s time those plans were revisited. A small but very wealthy and vocal NIMBY minority should not be allowed to veto a station which will help people who do essential jobs in Chelsea but could never afford to live there get to work more easily and less stressfully."
