This meeting took place on 17 June 2014. Read the transcript here.
How are the decisions made to refurbish or demolish social housing estates in need of renewal? And how does the Mayor’s funding affect the decisions?
Council housing makes up 12 per cent of homes in London, compared to 7 per cent in England. More than half were built in the thirty years following World War Two1. As the condition of the stock deteriorates over time, programmes to demolish or refurbish estates have divided opinion amongst communities, social landlords and developers.
The London Assembly’s Housing Committee will meet tomorrow to examine the process and criteria used by local authorities and other social landlords when they make decisions regarding the refurbishment or demolition of social housing.
The Committee will question the following guests:
- Professor Becky Tunstall, Director, Centre for Housing Policy, University of York
- Stephen McDonald, Director of Place, London Borough of Barnet
- Genevieve Macklin, Head of Strategic Housing, London Borough of Lewisham
- Stephen Ross, Asset Management Director, Southern Housing Group
- Russell Profitt, former head of Peckham Partnership
The meeting will take place on Tuesday, 17 June from 10.00am in Committee Room 5 at City Hall (The Queen’s Walk, London SE1).
Media and members of the public are invited to attend. The meeting can also be viewed via webcast.
