Tighter public health standards needed to cut Tube noise

Noise and vibrations from the Tube network is causing severe disruption for Londoners across the capital.

Due to the new COVID-19 restrictions, which came into effect today, people are spending more time in their homes than ever before. With significant noise and vibrations disturbing homes near Tube lines, a long-term solution must be found. Londoners cannot be affected by this issue any longer.

The London Assembly has today urged Transport for London to make Tube noise reduction a priority.

Tony Devenish AM, who proposed the motion said:

“Tube noise and excessive vibrations blight the lives of many Londoners and unacceptably Transport for London has had tin hear to the issue for far too long.

“Tube noise and vibrations can cause serious health problems and misery as Londoners living above the Underground struggle to sleep a wink. It’s time TfL recognised the severity of this problem. By introducing tighter public health standards, we can force TfL into action.

“Londoners are sick of TfL promising action, but failing to deliver. After today’s vote in the London Assembly, I hope the Mayor and TfL will begin to look at long-term solutions to tackle this problem seriously.”

Jennette Arnold OBE AM, who seconded the motion said:

“Tube noise has been a long-standing and seemingly intractable issue, impacting all the corners of our capital.

“This is has caused huge disruption to the lives of people in my constituency in particular, and I have been lobbying TfL over the past few years to find a viable solution.

“Whilst TfL have made some efforts to tackle the problem, imposing more robust public health standards on tube noise and excessive vibrations could push it further up the priority list.

“It is vital that a long-term strategy is now drawn up to offer my beleaguered constituents some light at the end of the tunnel.”

The full text of the motion is:

“This Assembly strongly supports the adoption of tighter public health standards on both Tube noise and excessive vibrations and urges Transport for London to make Tube noise reduction a priority.”
