A review by the Independent Commission on Mental Health and Policing in 2013, criticised the Metropolitan Police Service (MPS) for the way it responds to people with mental health issues.
The police regularly encounter members of the public experiencing a crisis or needing other help. An estimated one million Londoners are living with mental health needs.
Tomorrow, the London Assembly Police & Crime Committee will explore issues related to mental health and policing, and the Mayor’s progress in delivering on his commitments in the Police and Crime Plan. Topics will include:
- The current demand being placed on the Met to respond to mental health needs
- Identifying mental health needs on the frontline
- Responding to identified mental health needs
- Longer term improvements
The guests are:
- Lord Victor Adebowale CBE
- Andy Trotter, Chair, Oxleas NHS Foundation Trust
- Vicki Nash, Head of Policy and Campaigns, Mind
- Mike Brown OBE, Mental Health Coordinator, National Police Chiefs’ Council
- Anne Shuttleworth, Diversity Secretary, Metropolitan Police Federation
The meeting will take place on Wednesday, 12 December 2018 from 10.45am in the Chamber at City Hall (The Queen’s Walk, London SE1).
Media and members of the public are invited to attend
