Steve O’Connell AM, Chairman of the London Assembly Police and Crime Committee said:
“This Strategy is long overdue, as it was expected in November last year. We welcome the fact that it starts to address some of the recommendations the Police & Crime Committee has made, like ensuring front-line officers are better trained on issues such as domestic abuse.
The Strategy also makes an important commitment to support the creation of a Domestic Abusers’ Register – this is something the whole Assembly is campaigning for on a unanimous cross-party basis.
At a recent Committee meeting we heard there has been a 20 per cent rise in rape offences in London this year. The Strategy states that there is work going on to understand the reasons behind the shocking rise in these types of offences and this is absolutely critical. We need to understand what is driving an increase in reports to help us determine how to tackle it.
The Committee will be examining the detail of this Strategy at its next meeting, to find out how and when the commitments made by the Mayor will translate into real action for both perpetrators and victims of these crimes.”
