Statement from the Chair of the Budget Committee on council tax

Created on
21 December 2017

Gareth Bacon AM, Chairman of the Budget and Performance Committee, said:

“We note the Mayor’s proposal to increase his share of council tax by an average of 27p a week, to help fund the Metropolitan Police and London Fire Brigade.

In its Pre-Budget Report published on the 12th December 2017 the Assembly Budget and Performance Committee recommended the Mayor should consider whether to raise council tax by the maximum he can without a referendum (previously 1.99 per cent).

While the Mayor’s 5.1 per cent proposal will provide additional funding, it may be an unwelcome Christmas present to London council tax payers.

Our Committee will look into this proposal in January when scrutinising the Mayor’s Budget 2018-19”
