Social prescribing – the new ‘pill’ for London patients

Grow Back Greener
Created on
26 November 2018

Healthcare professionals in London are beginning to explore different ways of helping patients outside of a clinical setting.

Social prescribing is intended to enable healthcare professionals to refer their patients or for people to self-refer to non-clinical services in their communities. Health is determined by a range of socio-economic factors and clinical interventions are not the only answer.

Social prescribing can involve activities like attending an art class, playing football, feeding chickens on a farm or getting help to fill in paperwork.

The London Assembly Health Committee will discuss this holistic approach and how Londoners can benefit from it tomorrow. The guests are:

  • Dr Zoe Williams, Royal College of General Practitioners Clinical Champion “Physical Activity and Lifestyle" and ITV’s This Morning resident doctor
  • Dan Hopewell, Director of Knowledge and Innovation at the Bromley-by-Bow Centre and Co-Chair of the London Social Prescribing Network
  • Najnin Islam, Social Prescribing Scheme Manager at the Bromley-by-Bow Centre
  • Dr Mohan Sekeram, Merton Lead for Social Prescribing
  • Sue Hogarth, Director of Public Health, London Borough of Islington
  • Vicky Hobart, Greater London Authority (GLA) Health
  • Jill Wiltshire, GLA Health
  • Jennifer Neff, Co-Founder of Elemental Software.

The meeting will take place on Tuesday 27 November 2018 at 10.45am in Committee Room 5, City Hall (The Queen’s Walk, London SE1).

Media and members of the public are invited to attend.
