Throughout the numerous lockdowns during the last 12 months, there was a stark decrease in anti-radicalisation referrals to PREVENT.
The pandemic saw people spending more time at home and online than ever before. With terrorist organisations using online messaging platforms to communicate and groom young and vulnerable people, what is being done to protect their privacy whilst also protecting the public from potential terror threats?
The Police & Crime Committee will question the Met Police and Mayor’s Office for Policing and Crime (MOPAC) on issues relating to post-COVID counter-terrorism and the approach to collaboration on counter-terrorism in London.
Following this discussion, the Committee will also explore the failings identified in the report into the murder of Daniel Morgan and the action taken by the Met Police, the Mayor and the MOPAC.
The guests are:
Panel one:
- Commander Richard Smith, Head of the Met’s Counter-Terrorism command and London lead for UK Counter-Terrorism Policing
- Chief Superintendent Dawn Morris, OCU Commander, Protective Security Operations, MPS
- Kenny Bowie, Director of Strategy and MPS Oversight, MOPAC
- Oliver Levinson, Head of the Countering Violent Extremism programme, MOPAC
- Robin Merrett, Head of Operational Oversight, MOPAC
Panel two:
- Alastair Morgan, Brother of Daniel Morgan
The meeting will take place on Wednesday, 7 July from 10am.
Media and members of the public are invited to attend but numbers may be limited. The meeting can also be watched live here.
