Q&A with the Met on Charing Cross police scandal

Met Police
Created on
22 February 2022

In the wake of a damning report by the police watchdog earlier this month and subsequently being “put on notice” by the Mayor, Cressida Dick resigned as Commissioner of the Metropolitan Police.

Operation Hotton, led by the Independent Office for Police Conduct, unveiled evidence of bullying and harassment as well as highly offensive racist, sexist, and homophobic messages exchanged by officers predominantly based at Charing Cross Police Station.

The Met’s vision is to be “the most trusted police service in the world” [1]. But a series of recent events evidencing failures by the Met have impacted on trust and confidence in the police for many Londoners.

The London Assembly Police and Crime Committee will meet tomorrow to ask about rebuilding trust and confidence in the wake of Operation Hotton, and how the Commissioner’s resignation affects this work.

The meeting will also consider a recent report by the Independent Inquiry into Child Sexual Abuse on child sexual exploitation by organised networks [2], which looked at six areas including Tower Hamlets. It identified issues specific to the London Borough and criticised the Met’s failure to identify child sexual exploitation by organised networks.

The guests are:

  • Sophie Linden, Deputy Mayor for Policing and Crime
  • Sir Stephen House QPM, Deputy Commissioner of the Metropolitan Police

The meeting will take place on Wednesday, 23 February from 10am, at the Chamber in City Hall, Kamal Chunchie Way, London, E16 1ZE.

Media and members of the public are invited to attend.

The meeting can also be viewed LIVE or later via webcast or YouTube.
