HM Inspectorate of Constabulary and Fire and Rescue Services (HMICFRS) has placed the Metropolitan Police into its Engage phase, a form of special measures.
It will be required to develop an improvement plan and may receive support from the College of Policing or National Police Chiefs’ Council.
The force has recently been hit by a series of scandals including the murder of Sarah Everard, the strip-search of Child Q, and officers caught exchanging offensive messages.
In response to the watchdog’s decision, the Metropolitan Police said in a statement: "We are determined to be a police service Londoners can be proud of. We are talking to the inspectorate about next steps."
The London Assembly Police and Crime Committee will meet tomorrow to discuss the HMICFRS decision with the Metropolitan Police and the Deputy Mayor for Policing and Crime.
The guests are:
- Louisa Rolfe OBE, Assistant Commissioner for Met Operations, Metropolitan Police
- Laurence Taylor, Deputy Assistant Commissioner for Local Policing, Metropolitan Police
- Sophie Linden, Deputy Mayor for Policing and Crime
Other topics in the session include:
- Strip search of children
- Volume crime
- Section 60 stop and search
- Telephone Digital Investigation Unit
The meeting will take place on Wednesday, 6 July 2022 from 10am, in the Chamber at City Hall, Kamal Chunchie Way, E16 1ZE.
Media and members of the public are invited to attend.
The meeting can also be viewed LIVE or later via webcast or YouTube.
