Following the sentencing of Wayne Couzens, Shaun Bailey AM, Chairman of the London Assembly Police and Crime Committee said:
“The tragic murder of Sarah Everard sparked an outpouring of grief from Londoners and triggered an important discussion about the safety of women and girls on the capital’s streets.
“I welcome today’s sentence - he should spend the rest of his life behind bars. The distress Wayne Couzens has caused to Ms Everard’s family and friends is unforgiveable and the damage he has caused to the reputation of the police will be difficult to quantify.
“It is simply not acceptable that women and girls face harassment, abuse and violence in our city, and too often lack confidence that they will get the support they need if they report it to the police. Lessons need to be learned from this terrible murder and action must be taken.
“The Police and Crime Committee will continue to examine the work of the Metropolitan Police and its actions in ensuring the safety of all Londoners.”
