Policing on a reduced budget & CCTV funding

Two policemen patrolling the street
Created on
17 October 2016

In 2013, the One Met strategy was launched.

Its aim was to make the Metropolitan Police Service (the Met) ‘the best police service in the world’, with a budgetary aim to ‘spend less, but still deliver quality policing’. [1]

Considering the Mayor’s Office for Policing and Crime (MOPAC) and the Met may need to find up to £800 million of savings by 2020,[2] this will be challenging.

To secure these savings, the Met developed three strategies: the 2020 Commercial Strategy, the 2013-2016 Estates Strategy and the 2014-2017 Digital Policing Strategy.

Tomorrow the London Assembly Budget and Performance Committee will examine these money saving strategies for progress and impact on operational performance.

The Committee will hear from:

  • Rebecca Lawrence, Acting Chief Executive, MOPAC
  • Lynda McMullan, Director of Commercial & Finance, MPS
  • Angus McCallum, Director of Information, MPS
  • Matthew Punshon, Director of Property Services, MPS
  • Simon Wilson, Commercial Manager, MPS

The Committee will also consider funding for CCTV in London. It will examine why Westminster Council deprioritised CCTV funding and ask police about the implications for fighting crime across the capital if other councils follow suit. The following guests will be questioned:

  • Councillor Nickie Aiken, Westminster City Council, Cabinet Lead for Public Protection
  • Rebecca Lawrence, MOPAC Acting Chief Executive
  • Lynda McMullan, MPS Director of Finance

The meeting will take place on Tuesday, 18 October from 10.00am in The Chamber at City Hall (The Queen’s Walk, London SE1).

Media and members of the public are invited to attend. The meeting can also be viewed via webcast.
