Inflation continues to increase and is expected to rise to at least 13 per cent in October.

Many Londoners will be impacted by cost-of-living increases.

The London Assembly agreed today for the Chair of the London Assembly to write to the new Prime Minister to take urgent action to help the situation.

Marina Ahmad AM, who proposed the motion said:

“Londoners urgently need help to tackle spiralling food costs, rising rents and energy bills that threaten all of us. With inflation rising, the gap between real wages and the cost of living is ever widening.

“The new Prime Minister should act immediately, setting out a plan to help all those struggling in this cost of living crisis, ensuring no one misses out on vital support.

“With a severe recession on the horizon, Liz Truss and her new Government must provide this much needed support now”.

The full text of the motion is:

This Assembly notes that inflation continues to increase and is expected to rise to at least 13% in October, with food prices rising faster than the Consumer Price Index (CPI). The UK is forecast to fall into recession this year, with the longest downturn since 2008 predicted.

The reality of this situation is that Londoners will have to make the difficult decision between heating and eating and will result in children going to school hungry.

This Assembly also notes that businesses, hospitals, and the voluntary sector are not subject to the energy cap and their bills will rise by up to 1000 per cent.

This Assembly is concerned at the impact on Londoners and is disappointed by the abject failure of the Government to address inflation over the summer, despite the warnings of a recession this autumn and the extortionate predicted energy prices. Instead, the Government was embroiled in a leadership contest in which the former Chancellor, The Rt Hon Rishi Sunak MP, bragged about taking money out of deprived areas to put into wealthy towns, and Liz Truss has toyed with the cutting public sector workers pay.

The Assembly therefore calls on the Chair of Assembly to write to the new Prime Minister to take urgent action.
