Outer London Junction dangers for walkers and cyclists

Cyclists and Trucks
Created on
31 August 2017

How can Transport for London (TfL) and London Boroughs use junction works to unlock walking and cycling potential? What barriers do local people face when making regular, local journeys on foot or by bike?

The Great West Corridor is a strategic employment location in the east of Hounslow hosting multi-national companies such as Sky and GlaxoSmithKline. The area is often seen as the western gateway into London – but infrastructure barriers like the A4 and M4, rail lines and rivers, create segregation and restrict walking and cycling.

A draft masterplan for the corridor details proposals for major new transport links, including a new rail station at Transport Avenue and the extension of rail services from Brentford to the over ground station at Old Oak Common.

Tomorrow, Assembly Members will visit Brentford, west of the North Circular, with the M4 and A4 running through residential areas and passing nearby schools. The M4 runs above the A4 on an overpass. Members will be looking at three junctions (where Boston Manor Road, Windmill Road and Ealing Road cross the A4) and some residential roads.

There are cycle lanes along some sections of the stretch of A4 between Boston Manor Road and Ealing road. But the cycle lanes disappear near bus stops and parking bays.

The visit is part of Caroline Russell AM’s rapporteurship for the Transport Committee, looking at walking and cycling infrastructure at Outer London junctions.

Members will be taken on a tour of the area with local parents/campaigners and planners.

Guests will include:

Joanne Elmer, Portfolio Sponsor (Outer North), TfL

Rob Edwards, Sponsorship Manager (Regional), TfL

Harris Vallianatos, Sustainable Transport Projects Officer, Hounslow Council

John Dales, Director, Urban Movement

Local Parents & Campaigners
