No deal? What’s London’s plan?

Brexit puzzle 2x1
Created on
12 February 2019

How is London’s contingency planning progressing for a no-deal Brexit?

The London Resilience Forum (LRF) is at the heart of London’s contingency planning activities. Over the summer of 2018, the Mayor tasked the LRF to assess what impact leaving the EU without a deal would have on access to medicine, energy and food, as well as on the emergency services ability to maintain medical care, law and order.

The London Economic Action Partnership (LEAP) launched its Brexit Business Hub in September 2018. Through the Brexit Hub, the LEAP wants to encourage small and micro-businesses to think about the status of any EU staff, supply chains, taxation, intellectual property, and their ability to trade in the marketplace. It has had some 2,700 unique page views since it opened. [3]

Tomorrow, the London Assembly EU Exit Working Group will ask:

  • What work has been done on the food supply chain into London, the risks of disruption and the likely impact on low-income Londoners?
  • Are firms, including supermarkets stockpiling parts and food stuffs?
  • What is the likely risk to accessibility of medicines and medical supplies?
  • How is the work of the LEAP changing to reflect the increasing likelihood of a no-deal?
  • What kinds of help and support do businesses want from the Mayor and London government?
  • Which kind of business or which sectors are most at risk?

The guests are:

From 3–4pm

  • Fiona Twycross, Chair of the London Resilience Forum
  • John Hetherington, Head of London Resilience
  • A representative, NHS’s London region coordination centre

From 4–5pm

  • Jamie Izzard, Senior Manager LEAP

The meeting will take place on Wednesday 13 February from 3.00pm in Committee Room 4 (The Queen’s Walk, London SE1).

Media and members of the public are invited to attend

The meeting can also be viewed LIVE or later via webcast or YouTube

  1. Agenda Papers
  2. Len Duvall AM, Chair of the EU Exit Working Group, is available for interview – see contact details below.
  3. The LEAP is in the process of appointing a partner to deliver a dedicated Brexit Business support programme. The programme will run for nine months and will engage with 1,500 SME, through a series of workshops and events delivered across London’s sub regions. The first phase of the project will consist of workshops and masterclasses delivered by experts on issues that could potentially affect London based SMEs. This phase will support SMEs to think about potential areas where Brexit may impact their businesses and help them develop and put in place business strategies to limit any negative impact. After 29 March 2019 and once the terms of Brexit are more clearly defined the programme will be re-shaped to offer specific support as deemed necessary.
