The London Assembly has today supported the Mayor’s initiatives to ensure that London remains a welcoming city, particularly after the UK leaves the European Union.

Léonie Cooper AM, who proposed the motion said:

“Since the Referendum, our fellow EU citizens have been treated as bargaining chips in negotiations. We've also seen Londoners from all backgrounds subjected to rising levels of hate crime.

“It's crucial that we all acknowledge the huge contribution that one million EU Londoners, as well as many other non-EU communities, make to our capital.

“I fully support the efforts of City Hall to spread the message that London remains a welcoming city, built upon pluralism and diversity, regardless of whatever outcome that emerges from the uncertainty surrounding Brexit”.

The full text of the motion is:

“This Assembly celebrates London’s rich diversity and its long tradition of welcoming new communities. London’s diversity is one of its greatest assets. Our capital is home to a million EU citizens and one in three Londoners are born outside of the UK. This benefits our economy, enriches our culture and supports our public services.

This Assembly welcomes the initiatives implemented by the Mayor of London to ensure that London remains a welcoming city, particularly during the ongoing uncertainty surrounding Brexit and beyond.”
