London - what’s the plan?

Created on
19 January 2018

London is a dynamic city. Its population is predicted to reach a whopping 10.8 million in 2041.

On December 1st 2017, the Mayor published his draft London Plan, open to consultation until 2 March 2018.

The Planning Committee will be leading the London Assembly response to the consultation.

This enormous, all-encompassing new document sets out the strategic directions for London and the spatial elements of the Mayor’s policies to make sure that Londoners can live and grow in an inclusive and friendly city.

The Mayor proposes creating a lot more places of higher density in locations across London to get more efficient use of land. What are the implications of this?

In the first of two meetings to examine the Mayor’s draft London Plan on Monday, the Planning Committee will discuss:

  • The new design led approach to development and managing London’s need for new homes
  • Density - optimising housing density
  • Intensification – making the best use of land
  • Small sites - their contribution to new housing supply
  • Tall buildings.

The following guests will attend:

  • Michael Bach, Chair, Planning and Transport Committee, London Forum of Civic and Amenity Societies
  • Nicolas Boys-Smith, Founding Director, Create Streets
  • Rosemarie MacQueen, former Strategic Director for Built Environment, Westminster City Council
  • Jules Pipe, Deputy Mayor for Planning, Regeneration and Skills
  • Sunand Prasad, Senior Partner, Penoyre & Prasad Architects

The meeting will take place on Monday, 22 January from 1.00pm in Committee Room 5 at City Hall (The Queen’s Walk, London SE1).

Media and members of the public are invited to attend

The meeting can also be viewed LIVE via webcast or YouTube
