Responding to the announcement that Thames Water has agreed to pay £65m back to customers as part of a package of payments and penalties worth £120m, Labour’s London Assembly Environment Spokesperson, Leonie Cooper AM, said:

“Over the last two years, I have asked Thames Water to come before the London Assembly and explain themselves, as we felt they were wanting in their approach on leaks. I'm therefore not surprised to see they have now had massive fines handed down.

“We’ve heard appalling accounts of how Londoners have been affected by leaks, from having their properties flooded, to having their water supply cut. This small compensation is the least customers deserve given the inconvenience and upheaval many have endured.

We told Thames Water they needed to up their game - perhaps these fines will concentrate their minds further. We now want to see them taking more stringent action to improve their emergency procedures and put a stop to these seemingly endless leaks.”
