News from Leonie Cooper: Redrow withdrawal from Alton Estate regeneration

Created on
06 August 2020

In response to the news that the developers, Redrow, have pulled out of the regeneration of the Alton Estate, as part of their withdrawal from London, local London Assembly Member, Leonie Cooper AM, said:

“Last August, the Mayor quite rightly sent Redrow back to the drawing board on this scheme, yet they still failed to talk to officers and never came back with a proposal that offered a reasonable level of social and affordable housing. The design problems weren’t addressed either - and their inability to involve and consult residents properly was shocking.

“Redrow’s departure provides a golden opportunity for the Council to learn from its past mistakes on this scheme.

“Given the Council has now declared a Climate Emergency, it should first start by considering whether demolition and reconstruction is the best way ahead at all -and if this is the best way forward, then this time a development partner must be found who will involve and consult residents, engage with City Hall and present renewed plans that clearly work in the interests of the local community”.
