Calls for improved safety measures

at ‘notorious’ Woolwich Road

roundabout heard by new Deputy Mayor

The campaign to make Woolwich Road roundabout safer has been given a boost after local London Assembly Member, Len Duvall AM, took part in an urgent meeting on the issue with local councillors, the new Deputy Mayor for Transport and the Mayor’s Walking and Cycling Commissioner, organised by the Leader of Greenwich Council, Danny Thorpe.

Significant concerns have been raised over the safety of the roundabout after a cyclist was tragically killed at the junction in May.

The meeting yielded a positive agreement that TfL will look into interim measures to provide greater protections for cyclists using the roundabout.

There was also discussion of plans for longer term solutions to improve the route between Greenwich and Woolwich for all road users.

Local London Assembly Member, Len Duvall AM, said:

Following the tragic incident that recently took place at Woolwich Road roundabout, and the volume of concerns raised by local people, urgent action needs to be taken to improve safety for cyclists using the junction.

“I was very pleased to have had a positive and productive meeting with the Leader of the Council, the new Deputy Mayor for Transport and the Mayor’s Walking and Cycling Commissioner. There was an agreement that TfL will look into swift, interim measures to make the roundabout safer for cyclists.

“Alongside this, it was agreed over the long-term that the Council and TfL will re-examine the whole route between Greenwich and Woolwich to benefit all road users.

“I will continue to urge TfL to take the necessary action to preclude the potential for any more tragic incidents to occur at this junction”.
