Local London Assembly Member, Len Duvall AM, today called on Transport for London (TfL) to consider ‘Pollution Tunnels’ as part of the Silvertown Link proposal to tackle air pollution.
The Pollution Tunnels, being considered by Highways England, would see canopies built up around Britain's busiest roads to help nearby residents have better air quality. A trial structure, measuring four meters high and 100 metres long, was constructed in 2015 along the M62 near Simister, a small village outside Manchester.
London Assembly Member for Greenwich and Lewisham, Len Duvall AM, said:
“I have written to Transport for London asking them to looking at the Highways England work and how it could be used as part of the Silvertown Link. If the trial is effective this could be part of Silvertown Link proposals.
“If action can be taken to help residents in Greenwich breath more easily then it’s something we must explore.”
