News from Len Duvall OBE: Residents urged to have their say over City Airport flight changes

Created on
13 December 2016

People living in Greenwich and Lewisham are being urged to get in touch with about changed flight paths and increased noise. London City Airport and local politicians

The airport is one of the first to implement parts of the National Air Traffic Services programme to modernise the airspace across London and the South East. While this is expected to lead to a reduction of carbon emissions, it has also resulted in narrower flight paths. This means that plane activity has become more concentrated over certain areas of London, including Catford, Lee, and Eltham. This has led to an increase in noise for some residents.

Local group HACAN East, which opposes the changes, is running the 'Campaign of a Lifetime' to try and reverse the decision regarding the new narrower flight paths. The group says before the change, flight paths were dispersed across a wide swathe of South London and resulted in few complaints from the area.

The airport will be reviewing the new flight paths early next year, and will consider feedback from residents as part of their decision. The airport can be contacted by post at London City Airport, City Airport House, Royal Docks, E16 2PB, by email at [email protected], or by phone on 0207 646 0200.

Local Labour London Assembly Member Len Duvall AM said:

It is vital that residents who are suffering from increased noise pollution make their voices heard on this important issue.

Any steps to reduce the environmental impact of flying should be welcomed, but this should be balanced with the needs of residents.

There is technology available on the airport’s website which can help people track which flights are making noise near them.

I would urge anybody effected not only to contact the airport, but to also get in touch with me, their local council or their MP.
