We have recently seen City Hall announce that 55,000 free trees are now up for grabs for community groups and families across London to plant in shared green spaces and gardens.
We are in the midst of a climate emergency. Political leaders across the world must come together to urgently tackle this threat, but our communities can play their part by taking advantage of this scheme to green our city and boost its biodiversity.
This comes ahead of National Tree Planting Week, taking place at the end of November. Last year, on a single weekend, Londoners put their gardening gloves on to plant almost 80,000 trees.
Last month, it was positive to see City Hall allocate a share of £600,000 to fund tree planting in Greenwich and Lewisham contributing to the target of increasing London’s tree cover by 10% by 2050. I would strongly encourage local people and community groups to build upon the work being undertaken and apply for the tree planting scheme by the deadline of 11th November through the Greater London Authority website at: www.london.gov.uk/plant-a-tree
