Next week London will welcome athletes from all over the world to the Paralympic Games and thousands of people across the world will watch as they achieve excellence . At the same time, the government will be simultaneously closing down several Remploy factories, including the plant at Barking which provides high quality services to the electronics market, that have provided many disabled people with employment.
Labour London Assembly Member John Biggs said: “It’s a pity the Prime Minister hasn’t shown the same enthusiasm for disabled workers about to be made redundant by Remploy in Barking as a result of his government's misguided policies towards sheltered employment for skilled workers with various disabilities.”
“Whilst I am supportive of improving access to work for all, the reality of the current economic climate is that there will be little prospect for those who lose their jobs finding new employment if the closure goes ahead and I urge the Prime Minister to reverse the decision, it is not too late."
“It is truly appalling and disingenuous that at the same time as celebrating the amazing achievements of many disabled people who are about to participate in the Paralympics Games; this government is depriving disabled people of a workplace, livelihood and purpose.”
