News from John Biggs (past staff): Mayor's forced work experience scheme

Created on
28 August 2012

In response to the Mayor of London’s announcement of a pilot scheme in London that will see 18-24 year olds being forced to take up 13 weeks of unpaid work experience, Labour London Assembly Member John Biggs said:

“While it is useful for young people to gain valuable work experience the Mayor’s plan misses the point entirely. The fact is there are over 222,000 people seeking work in London but there are only 54,000 vacancies. The government and mayor need to adopt a plan for jobs and growth.”

“We are in a double-dip recession that was made in Downing Street. Instead of forcing young people to take up work experience that may not be useful for their future careers, the mayor and government should instead focus on creating the jobs that our economy so desperately needs. Are they really so out of touch that they think forcing young people to do unpaid work experience will deliver economic growth. What planet are they on?”
