Local London Assembly Member John Biggs has re-iterated his concerns for the safety of cyclists on East London’s roads following a further fatality on Friday 5th July in which a young woman on a Barclay’s Hire bike was killed following a collision with a lorry on the Cycle Superhighway 2.
John Biggs said "Our thoughts are with the loved ones of this young woman. Whilst we must avoid any knee jerk reaction, clearly questions need to be answered and the reputation of the Barclays’ bike and the superhighways could be damaged. The bikes they are seen as solid and 'safe' but we need to understand if there are any design problems but more urgently we need to look at the Super Cycle Highways themselves. I have had many complaints about this part of the Super Cycle Highway, from Aldgate to the Bow Flyover, because in many places the lane widths mean that cyclists are sharing space with motorists. On a busy road this can be confusing - you may think you have 'priority' on the blue surfaces but these are often shared with motorists. I think this superhighway needs serious redrawing.”
