London Labour Assembly Member John Biggs has again met with representatives of Transport for London (TfL) to discuss his concerns with the current layout of the Cycling Superhighway 2. This follows the tragic death of a French student outside Aldgate Station on Friday July 5th.
John has concerns that the design and layout of CS2 is not safe for cyclists and falls way short of the design standards of other cycle superhighways where cyclists are segregated from other traffic.
John Biggs said “I have been pressing for changes since the inception of the cycle superhighway. I have met with TfL twice this month. I am now calling on the Mayor to ensure that options for changes to CS2 are published as a matter of urgency to make it safer for all road users. CS3 is an example of a superhighway that is well designed and largely works well. The standard of design of the CS2 is inadequate and creates, in my view, a false sense of assurance to cyclists”.
John added “I note that the Mayors recent cycling vision says, “We will substantially improve the existing Barclays Cycle Superhighways” & “All future Barclays Cycle Superhighways will be delivered to much higher standards, closer to international best practice”.
John continued “There are questions as to why CS2 was not delivered to the higher standard the Mayor talks about and whether any changes he proposes will meet this higher standard
