London is projected to attract 40 million overnight visitors a year by 2025 - a rise of 30 per cent from 31.2 million in 2016.
A tourism levy is a small charge on accommodation and can be earmarked to support culture and tourism.
Could London benefit from such a levy? It would potentially raise between £91 million to £364 million a year and major cities, like New York, Paris and Berlin already use one.
Tomorrow, the London Assembly Economy Committee meets to discuss the current state of the London economy and the work of London & Partners. How will London & Partners, the Mayor’s official promotional agency, ensure that London continues to attract tourists?
The guests are:
- Rajesh Agrawal, Deputy Mayor for Business, Deputy Chair of the London Economic Action Partnership (LEAP) and Chairman of London and Partners
- Andrew Cooke, Chief Operations Officer, London and Partners
In the second part of the meeting the Committee will question London’s first Chief Digital Officer, Theo Blackwell. Topics for discussion will include his main priorities and ambitions, cyber security, smart data and digital inclusion.
What improvements can be made to public services with technology and data? How can we ensure the information being digitally held on Londoners is safe and secure? How can the Chief Digital Officer reduce digital exclusion in London?
The meeting will take place on Tuesday, 7 November from 10:00am in Committee Room 5 at City Hall (The Queen’s Walk, London SE1).
