How can we help communities tackle violence?

Public concern about the level of violence in the capital is increasing, and the 100th homicide investigation of the year was launched recently by the Met.

The London Assembly Police and Crime Committee will ask victims, former offenders, young people and charity workers for suggested solutions to the problem. Main questions will include:

  • How can communities and the police work together to tackle violence?
  • How can we make sure the root causes of violence are reduced?
  • What do Londoners want the Mayor and City Hall to do to help them prevent violence?

An open mic event, with invited guests, takes place tomorrow morning at City Hall. Special guests are:

  • Barry and Margaret Mizen, parents of murder victim Jimmy, who now run an anti-knife crime charity.

  • Megaman (Dwayne Vincent), leader of Brit award winning urban music group So Solid Crew, who grew up on a crime-ridden estate.
  • Robyn Travis, who was formerly involved in knife crime but now is a writer and helps educate young people.
  • Amani Simpson, who was stabbed seven times by a gang, and now campaigns against violence.
  • Pastor Kevin Yfeko, of the SPAC Nation Church - a former prolific gang leader who used to carry weapons such as knives and guns.

The meeting will take place on Thursday 20 September from 10am in The Chamber at City Hall (The Queen’s Walk, London SE1).

Media and members of the public are invited to attend
