The number of recorded hate crimes in London is rising. Some of this is due to a growing willingness of victims to come forward, but divisive world events, from the Brexit vote to the Christchurch terrorist attacks, can also trigger short-lived spikes.
The Mayor has said the Met will take a “zero-tolerance approach” to hate crime and many of his commitments are focussed on victim support and increased education and awareness.
The Police & Crime Committee will tomorrow examine whether enough focus is being given to prevention rather than response. The Committee will also investigate the barriers to reporting hate crime and the experience of victims at the hands of the police and criminal justice system.
The guests are:
- Dave Rich, Head of Policy, Community Security Trust
- Jemma Levene, Deputy Director, Hope Not Hate
- Louise Holden, London Disability Hate Crime Project Manager, Inclusion London
- Nick Antjoule, Head of Hate Crime Services, Galop
- Superintendent Waheed Khan, Metropolitan Police
- Iman Atta, Director, Tell MAMA
The meeting will take place on Thursday 23 May 2019 from 10.00am in the Chamber at City Hall (The Queen’s Walk, London SE1).
Media and members of the public are invited to attend
