The potential London-wide ULEZ expansion needs to deliver maximum improvement in air quality.

Other cities across the UK have received support to scrap polluting vehicles.

Today the London Assembly agreed a motion calling for central Government to create a significant national scrappage scheme to support motorists to switch to cleaner vehicles that are ULEZ compliant.

Elly Baker AM, who proposed the motion said:

"With proposals on the table to further expand the ULEZ, more Londoners are set to benefit from cleaner air- saving the NHS billions in the coming decades. We must also consider the financial impacts on Londoners with more polluting vehicles who need to drive for work, to fulfil caring responsibilities or for mobility reasons".

"It has been good to see the Mayor commit to providing additional funding on top of the £61 million that he has already invested to help more Londoners, businesses and charities upgrade their vehicles to meet greener standards.

"The Government has given financial support to other cities to set up their clean air zones. Ministers must now extend this helping hand to London and make a significant contribution to the funding pot that City Hall has already opened to support vehicle scrappage schemes".

The full text of the motion is:

This Assembly strongly believes central Government should create a significant national scrappage scheme to support motorists to switch to cleaner vehicles that are ULEZ compliant. This would be in line with the support Government has given to other cities across the UK to support scrappage of polluting vehicles.

We believe this is essential to ensure the potential London-wide ULEZ expansion delivers the maximum improvement in air quality, while working for all Londoners, particularly those who need to drive for work or caring responsibilities, and for mobility reasons.
