Mayor risking capital’s future with disastrous policies

Sadiq Khan has failed Londoners with a series of disastrous policies and broken promises in his first six months in office, according to a London Assembly member.

Gareth Bacon AM says the Mayor needs to properly explain why he has ditched key election pledges on affordable homes targets, zero public transport strikes and the planting of two million trees.

He also claims the cost of Mayoral decisions, including freezing fares, the selling of TfL land at below market value and the introduction of a Hopper bus fare, could top £760million, seriously risking investment in the capital.

This Saturday (November 5) marks six months in charge for Sadiq Khan, and Assembly Member Bacon wants the Mayor to reassess some of his ‘damaging’ decisions and policies.

London Assembly member Gareth Bacon said:

“In his first six months, Sadiq Khan has tried painting himself as a ‘Mayor for all Londoners’.

“Unfortunately, when you look closer, it is clear he has done far less for Londoners than he would claim, with a series of ill-thought out policies and a litany of broken promises.

“His fares freeze does nothing for the millions of season ticket holders across the capital, and seriously risks transport investment by blowing a £640m black hole[1] in TfL’s budget.

“He has broken major election pledges, most recently ditching his promise to plant two million trees, and has been accused of avoiding scrutiny from elected members of the London Assembly[2].

“I sincerely hope that the Mayor spends his next six months thinking hard about sensible policies for London and actually delivers on some of the things he has promised.”
