Fire safety in high-rise residential buildings

Created on
18 July 2018

As the harrowing evidence in the Grenfell Tower Fire inquiry continues to be heard, the London Assembly Fire, Resilience and Emergency Planning Committee (FREP) meets tomorrow to discuss fire safety post-Grenfell, in particular, in high-rise residential buildings.

Fires in tall buildings are relatively rare, despite the fire at Grenfell Tower. They have fallen by almost 50 per cent since 2009/10. However, the speed of their decline slowed between 2014/15 and 2016/17, with an uptick in 2017/18.

  • What regular checks and inspections does the London Fire Brigade (LFB) undertake to assess fire safety in high-rises?
  • How does the LFB currently intervene in building design and construction?
  • What immediate actions were taken after Grenfell to ensure the safety of high-rise residential buildings?

The guests are:

  • Dan Daly, Assistant Commissioner, London Fire Brigade
  • Nick Coombe, Strategic Technical Adviser, London Fire Brigade
  • Lynsey Seal, Head of Fire Engineering, London Fire Brigade
  • Jon O’Neill OBE, Managing Director, Fire Protection Association
  • Dr Jim Glockling, Technical Director, Fire Protection Association
  • Gary Strong, Global Building Standards Director, RICS

The meeting will take place on Thursday, 19 July from 2:30pm in The Chamber at City Hall (The Queen’s Walk, London SE1).

Media and members of the public are invited to attend.

The meeting can also be viewed via webcast.
