Why does London send tonnes of its waste abroad to create energy and heat for homes in other countries while Scandinavian countries, the Netherlands and Germany favour energy from waste plants?
What should London do with its rotting rubbish that can’t be re-used or recycled? Burning it is an option, it produces energy and heat – but does this affect our health?
In its final meeting on waste management, the Environment Committee will discuss energy from waste incineration - its impact on the environment and public health, as well as the potential implications of Brexit.
The guests are:
FIRST PANEL: Energy from Waste, from 2:30pm:
- Julian Walker, Chief Operating Officer, Cory Riverside Energy
- Professor Darryl Newport, University East London and Institute of Civil Engineers representative
- Tim Rotheray, Director, The Association for Decentralised Energy
- Doug Simpson, Principal Policy & Programme Officer, GLA
- Shlomo Dowen, National Coordinator, United Kingdom Without Incineration Network

In the second part of the meeting the committee will discuss how to drive down dangerous air particles. These populate the air we breathe in urban areas and can be generated from wood-burners, pizza ovens, tube and construction dust. The guests are:
