Last month, the Metropolitan Police launched an investigation after a video appeared to show a group of men spitting at a bus of Jewish passengers celebrating Hanukkah in central London. The force said they were treating the incident as a hate crime [1].
There are eight types of crime recorded by the Metropolitan Police as hate crimes – racist and religious, faith, anti-Semitic, homophobic, Islamophobic, sexual orientation, transgender, and disability.
In the year to November 2021, incidents in London had risen across the eight categories. Tomorrow, the London Assembly Police and Crime Committee will examine this rise and the Mayor’s proposals for tackling hate crime in his draft Police and Crime Plan 2021-25.
The guests are:
- Commander Melanie Dales, Head of Profession, Safeguarding, Metropolitan Police Service
- Kenny Bowie, Director for Strategy and Policing Oversight, Mayor’s Office for Policing and Crime (MOPAC)
- Barry Hughes, Chief Crown Prosecutor for London North, Crown Prosecution Service
- Dr Dave Rich, Director of Policy, Community Security Trust
- Assistant Chief Constable Charlie Doyle, British Transport Police
- Dr Matteo Vergani, Tackling Hate
- Louise Holden, Hate Crime Partnership Project Manager, Inclusion London
The meeting will take place on Thursday, 6 January from 10am, in Rooms G02 – G03 – G04, LFB Headquarters, 169 Union Street, London, SE1 0LL.
Media and members of the public are invited to attend.
The meeting can also be viewed LIVE or later via webcast or YouTube.
