In response to Transport for London’s (TfL) announcement today that they will be consulting on new changes to the congestion charge, including reducing its hours of operation, Labour’s London Assembly Transport Spokesperson, Elly Baker AM, said:
“At the start of the pandemic, the Government required TfL to extend and increase the congestion charge as part of the first emergency funding settlement.
“As we now look ahead to our economic recovery, it is vital that we support businesses on one hand, but on the other, ensure we tackle air pollution and congestion.
“It is positive to see TfL consult with Londoners on a balanced approach to the future of the congestion charge and it is important to get a wide range of views on this.
“Reducing its hours of operation in the evening will provide a much-needed boost to our struggling cultural and hospitality sectors and wider night-time economy.
“What TfL urgently needs going forward is a long-term and no-strings attached funding deal from the Government, otherwise transport services, jobs and key infrastructure projects will continue to be put at risk”.
