Three years on from the London riots, the London Assembly’s Regeneration Committee will tomorrow visit Croydon and see what impact the Mayor’s Regeneration Fund has had in helping the local economy and community, as the rebuilding continues.
Following the civil disturbances in August 2011, the Mayor’s Regeneration Fund was announced to help affected areas. Parts of Croydon were identified as having a high concentration of deprivation and unemployment and a fragmented local community. It was found that 44 per cent of Croydon residents involved in riot activity lived in five wards bordering the London Road area, and some of the Mayor’s Funding targets these areas in West Croydon.
Areas including London Road and Reeves Furniture Store, which were damaged during the riots, were identified as key targets for post-riot regeneration support.
Tomorrow Assembly Members from the Regeneration Committee will visit areas in Croydon where regeneration projects are underway. They will also meet with residents, business owners and Croydon councillors to see what difference the Mayor’s post-riot regeneration support has made to physical improvements and encouragement of community engagement and pride.
