Crossrail - transport chiefs face Assembly questioning

Crossrail train
Created on
16 December 2019

Crossrail has been riddled with delay, overspend and uncertainty since it was announced that the line would not open in December 2018.

One year on from the initial opening date of the central section, where has this major infrastructure project got to?

Londoners are now told that the central section will open “as soon as practically possible in 2021”.[2] What is the cause of the delay and why do timings keep getting pushed further and further into the future? With a staged opening planned, when can Londoners expect to see a full east to west service from Reading and Heathrow Airport to Abbey Wood and Shenfield?

Tomorrow, the London Assembly Transport Committee will put frank questions to the Mayor of London and London’s transport chiefs - what is the latest progress, when will the line be fully operational, will costs increase even further and where will additional funding come from?

The Committee will also question whether or not recommendations made in its report ‘Derailed: Getting Crossrail back on track’ have been implemented.

The guests are:

  • Sadiq Khan, Mayor of London
  • Heidi Alexander, Deputy Mayor for Transport
  • Mike Brown MVO, Commissioner, Transport for London
  • Mark Wild, Chief Executive, Crossrail Limited
  • Tony Meggs CB, Chairman, Crossrail Limited

The meeting will take place on Tuesday, 17 December 2019 at 10:00am in The Chamber (The Queen’s Walk, London SE1).

Media and members of the public are invited to attend

The meeting can also be viewed LIVE via webcast or YouTube
